The play aims to discuss about the constant tussle that Singapore faces in the high rate of migration of Singaporeans to other countries. This play was chosen because of its relevance to the present day situation in Singapore. The play seeks to discuss about the reasons behind the departure of a large number of local talents to foreign countries instead of staying in Singapore.
Other than that, we hope this project would:
1. Raise awareness of the Drama specialisation in the Degree programme
2. Expose fellow NIE trainees, JC/CI and polytechnic students to local plays and to appreciate the local arts scene
3. Allows us to put theory into practice and to experiment with different modes of staging and acting
Eleanor has written for Singapore theatre for over 20 years. Her most recent play is The Campaign to Confer the Public Service Star on JBJ" which, coincidentally, will start a three-week production on 19th September. She is also known for the Invitation to Treat Trilogy comprising Mergers & Accusations, Wills & Seccession and Jointly & Severably. Eleanor's plays have been published by firstfruits.
Exit is a play about the issues of citizenship and questions of loyalty and nation-building. It examines the problems that arise when aspirations and frustrations lead to difficult choices.
Chen Tze Wen, is a Singapore man who gets bogged down by the stresses of life in Singapore. Wanting more for himself and his family, he decides to pack up and migrate to another country. The plot unfolds 24 hours after he makes the decision to migrate when the efficient bureaucracy gets wind of his decision. He is then forcefully led to the courtroom and prosecuted for his lack of loyalty to the country. Defended by a nonchalant attorney, the tension in the courtroom is riveting as the drama plays out.
What will be Wen’s fate and will he get the “exit” that he was hoping for?
Adelene Tjoandi
Stage Manager; Actress
Born in Jakarta, Adelene came to Singapore in 2006 to study in NIE. Her passion for the Arts, mainly Music and Theatre, has given her the opportunity to be involved in various skits and 2 major school productions (musicals), including King Arthur and His Quest for the Holy Grail (2006) as the Stage Manager and Associate Director and West Side Story (2007) as one of the cast and acting coach. The Coffin Is Too Big for the Hole (2006) was her first production in Singapore. She's also an Associate Board of Royal School of Music grade 7 piano student. Adelene is thrilled to be part of this production in her 2nd year of study in NIE and hopes to increase her capability in theatre practice. She also wishes to thank her fellow production colleagues for giving her the chance to be involved and for their support.
Huang Xuwen
Assistant Director; Actress
Like Jessamyn and Jae, Xuwen has entered the third of studying Drama as her major for her BA(ed) programme in NIE. It is her first time working with her peers and academic juniors in producing a full-length play, and Xuwen is grateful for being part of the experience. She has once performed publicly alongside her peers in a shorter adaptation of 'Ang Tau Mui' for the Acting module, and in a keynote performance that concerns ethnography with multilingualism in schools in the recent LangScape Conference 2006. For her, Drama is still a big world out there for her to discover, and directing this play was an eye opener. Xuwen would like to thank all who are involved in this play for their efforts, and hopes there will be more chances of working together like this in the future. =)
Jae Ernyl Cada Lingbaoan
Actress
Born in the Philippines, Jae Ernyl is a year 3 student in NIE, undergoing the Bachelor of Arts Programme. With her major subject being Drama, she has been pursuing her passion for theatre in Secondary School and Junior College through her involvement in a number of school productions including 2 SYF performances. In her first production in 2005, she acted in a short adaptation of Ang Tau Mui, for her Acting Module. In 2006, she was part of the cast for a Chinese Theatre Circle production The Patriotic Princess and a keynote address for Langscape Conference 2007. Exit is her first full-scale student-initiated production with her fellow Drama enthusiasts and she finds it a refreshing experience to be a part of it. Next to Drama, her other love is singing.
Leong Weng Onn, Wayne
Director; Actor
The thought of studying Drama in university never came across Wayne’s mind. Neither does he know that such course exits. Drama has all along been one of his interests thus he just would not let such opportunity slip by. Defying the norms, experimenting new things, doing the unexpected and springing surprises are his usual styles. Creativity and teamwork – two important elements he values during his work. He was involved in Mad Forest and The Coffin Is Too Big for the Hole. Exit is his maiden directorial work and he hopes to bring in a different dimension to this play.
Sri Laxshemy D/O Vasu Thevan
Costume & Make-up Manager; Actress
Sri, having read drama pieces for her study in Literature, found it very easy to fall in love with the performance element of Drama. She was first introduced to the performing arts in Millennia Institute when she joined the Speech and Drama Club there. She had a taste of Drama there with the workshops attended and winning the Gold award for Green Socks (2004) in SYF Drama competition. Upon entering NIE, she was torn between taking up English Language and Drama but decided to throw caution to the wind and do what her heart desired. She is currently majoring in Literature with Drama as a minor. She has a love for reading and and has a colourful imagination. She is quintessentially quirky and Drama is the outlet through which she finds a creative release. Being able to take on different roles and experiment with them, according to how her imagination wills it to be, is her liberation. Mad Forest (2006) and The Coffin Is Too Big For The Hole (2006) were her first two performances in NIE. She is thrilled to be able to do a joint production with the rest of the Drama cohort.
Tay Aik Yong, Jessamyn
Props Master; Actress
Jessamyn is currently a 3rd year student in NIE. Upon entering NIE, a decision to venture into something different in place of English Literature came to mind, and hence, Drama and theatre.
Prior to EXIT, the self-proclaimed theatre junkie was involved in a module production of Ang Tau Mui in her first year. This was followed by a keynote performance during the Langscape Conference, led by Ms. Madonna Stinson. In April 2006, Jessamyn was also involved with the Chinese Theatre Circle, playing the role of a junior court maiden. EXIT will be her 4th performance, and will mark a turning point as she sets to push her limits, physically, mentally and also in shaping her own characters.
Away from theatre and the arts, Jessamyn's other loves include treeclimbing and tennis. It is her dream that she will do a degree in English Literature and a diploma in fashion designing after graduation. She has recently taken up dance sport, and hopes to venture into competitive dancing in the future. Jessamyn also enjoys cosplaying, subculture fashion and photography, and her works can be viewed at http://littlettol.deviantart.com/gallery.
Teh Min Yea, Amandia
Light & Sound Manager
Amandia is a year 2 drama student in NIE. She enjoys the arts and theatre but had no formal training prior to entering NIE. Amandia was involved in the production of 'The Coffin is Too Big for the Hole' (2006) and she greatly treasures that memorable experience. For this play 'Exit', she has committed herself to be part of the backstage crew. She thanks all who have helped made this production possible.
Tiara Mia
Producer; Lighting Manager; Actress
Tiara fell in love with theatre during her days in Millennia Institute. Ever since then, she followed her passion everywhere, and that eventually lead to the doors of the Nanyang Playhouse. She is active in the Malay theatre scene outside of NIE and looking for opportunities to be in involved in more English productions. She jumped at the idea of doing this production because she feels that it is important for all of the drama students to be more involved in theatre-making. Some of the performances that she have been in are Pesta Peti Putih (2003), Sayembara Teater (2004), Anna Hidayah, MI’s semi-musical (2004), Gema Puisi Artistik (2005), The Coffin is Too Big for the Hole (2006), Mad Forest (2006), Gentarasa (2007), Awang belanga, kononnya (2007), NUS Pesta Budaya (2007). Her group, Purnama Sari won best overall performance and stage direction, among other awards received in the NUS competition (2007). She hopes to carry on learning theatre and teach children about the joy of drama so that it can benefit all as how it has benefited her to be a better person.
Wong Han Xian, Joshua
Publicist; Actor
Upon entering university, Joshua decided that it was time to try out something that he’s always been interested instead of rooting himself in the sciences. With no former training and experience in making theatre, he has proven himself suited for the theatre scene when he successfully performed Mad Forest (2006) & The Coffin Is Too Big for the Hole (2006) as part of the ensemble cast for his performance assessment. He hopes that you’ll appreciate the performance and the publicity as he has spent a great deal of time and effort on them. He hopes to obtains a Masters degree in educational drama and one day, be able to effectively apply elements of drama in the teaching of Mathematics, his major area of interest. Apart from that, he is seeking opportunities in working with local youth and contemporary theatre companies.
